What is PAN card ?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a card, by an Assessing Officer of the Income Tax Department.

Any Resident Indian, Non Resident Indian , Foreign National , OCI / PIO card holder can apply for PAN card.

PAN card is mandatory for above mentioned individual for any type of Investments in India.

Why NRI’s require PAN card ?

It is not compulsory for everyone to have a PAN card. Having a PAN card would enhance your credibility with Indian Banks for Various loans and mortgages.

PAN card is required for the following purposes.

  1. PAN card is compulsory when you buy/sell immovable properties in India.
  2. PAN card is compulsory when you buy any Four Wheeler in India.
  3. PAN card is compulsory for taking Insurance policies.
  4. PAN card is required when you want to buy Bankers Draft/Pay orders.
  5. PAN card is compulsory for opening demat/trading account to buy/sell shares from the Indian Stock Exchanges ( NSE and BSE )
  6. PAN card is required for any cash deposit exceeding Rs.50,000.00
  7. PAN card can be used as a valid Identity Proof.

Can a Foreign National who is eligible for ESOP apply for PAN card?

Yes, he should. PAN card is mandatory for opening demat/trading account for any Foreign National to exercise his/her ESOP shares.
